2020 Election Bios

FOR DIRECTOR

Malik Javed CCSP-  is a Principal and oversees engineering operations for Cost Segregation projects at KBKG. He is a Certified member of the American Society of Cost Segregation Professionals (ASCSP) and is currently a member of the ASCSP Technical Standards Committee. Since joining KBKG in 2004, Malik has performed thousands of Cost Segregation studies for clients in various industries, regularly reviewed architectural and engineering drawings and construction cost budgets. He has provided continuing professional education to hundreds of CPA’s across the country on various real estate tax issues. Malik has also successfully represented KBKG’s clients in an IRS audit. Prior to joining KBKG, Malik worked as a Resident Engineer in Construction Management at PEPAC. He was responsible for the overall performance and quality of work; including the verification of bills, estimates, and claims, as well as supervising the construction of buildings in accordance with design and specifications. Malik earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s of Science degree in Engineering Management from California State University, Northridge.

Warren Kitchens CCSP- Warren has over 27 years of industry experience, Warren specializes in Cost Segregation, Fixed Asset Reviews, Repairs versus Capital Analyses, and Fixed Assets Management Services for public and private companies. He has analyzed multi-project portfolios including more than 30,000 assets, and successfully defended his work before the IRS.

Kathy Oberhardt CCSP- Kathy is a Manager with the Credits, Incentives, and Methods practice for the Davenport office of RSM. As a Tangible Property Specialist, she has over eleven years of experience performing cost segregation analyses, fixed asset and tangible property tax advisory services. Her expertise includes commercial energy efficiency deduction projects, energy credits, fixed asset review studies, and tangible asset and repair studies. Prior to joining RSM, Kathy spent several years as a systems integrator installing and programming production automation systems in various manufacturing facilities throughout the Midwest. Additionally, Kathy was responsible for project design, budget management, and construction implementation. Holding degrees in Engineering, Business Administration, and Accounting, Kathy’s prior experience as a project engineer adds invaluable technical expertise to the TPS team, particularly with her in-depth knowledge of manufacturing systems design and implementation. RSM US LLP is an audit, tax, and consulting firm, focused on the middle market in the United States and a member of the global accounting network RSM International. It is the fifth largest accounting firm in the United States.

Rob Rahner CCSP – is the Managing Director for Cost Recovery Solutions, LLC. Rob has more than 22 years of cost segregation and tangible asset appraisal experience ranging from Big 4 to start-up environments. He has been an active member of the ASCSP for the last ten years including serving on the Board of Directors and as the Chair of the Education Committee for the past several years. Rob has a Mechanical Engineering degree and MBA from Rutgers University, and is a CFA charter holder and Accredited Senior Appraiser with the ASA.

Gregory N. Roberts,  CCSP – Greg is a mechanical engineer and mathematician with more than 29 years of experience as a Senior Facility Engineer and a Senior Engineering Consultant. Prior to his employment with Bedford in 2002, Greg was the Senior Facility Engineer responsible for the construction and operational management of a $1.2 billion Semiconductor manufacturing facility. Within the Bedford organization, Greg is responsible for project assignments to engineers, providing technical assistance to the engineering and sales teams, providing technical oversight on projects, initial and follow-on training of new hires, and following up on business development leads. He also conducts several dozen Cost Segregation Studies each year for select clients. Greg was one of the first certified members in the organization. Greg is a member of the ASME, AIAA and APENS.

Max Vignola CCSP – Max is the Director of tax and R&D Services at Bedford Cost Segregation LLC. With over 12 years of experience in the field of tax and Cost Segregation, he is responsible for tax reviews and report certifications, ensuring that Bedford’s Cost Segregation studies are based on an appropriate interpretation of tax law and current IRS pronouncements. Prior to joining Bedford, Max held roles in both the public and private sectors of tax. During the first four years of Max’s tax career he focused on cost segregation and tax consulting services while working at one of the Big 4 accounting firms in Boston MA.

Brendan Walsh CCSP -Brendan is a Principal at Clark Schaefer Hackett and leads the firm’s Cost Segregation and Fixed Assets practice.  With over 15 years of experience, Brendan has worked with companies ranging from start-ups to publicly traded entities, focusing on fixed asset strategies, depreciation, cost segregation, and tangible property regulations.  Brendan earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting as well as an MBA in Taxation from Xavier University in Cincinnati, prior to earning his Juris Doctorate from the University of Dayton School of Law.  Throughout his career, Brendan has worked in Big 4, small firm, and private industry environments.  After joining Clark Schaefer Hackett in 2013, Brendan formed and developed the firm’s Cost Segregation and Fixed Assets Practice.  Brendan is a licensed attorney in the state of Ohio and a Certified Member of the American Society of Cost Segregation Professionals.  He lives in Cincinnati with his wife Heather and their six children (ages 4 – 13).

Phil Whatley CCSP-  is a Senior Manager in Deloitte’s Tangible Asset Valuation practice and has primarily spent his 13+ years there conducting cost segregation studies for Federal income tax purposes.  Phil also conducts construction advisory services (cost & schedule planning, construction audits) as well as valuation analyses of personal and real property assets for financial reporting, federal income tax, and property tax purposes.  Phil graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction and a minor in Finance.  He lives in Atlanta with his wife Susan and two daughters (9 and 7 years old).  Phil joined ASCSP in 2016.

FOR SECRETARY

Lester Cook CCSP- Lester has nearly 20 years of experience in the tax specialty service industry. He is a Principal of KBKG’s Fixed Asset Review Practice. He is a certified member of the American Society of Cost Segregation professionals, a group that he has been a part of since 2008. Throughout his career, Lester has completed cost segregation analyses on thousands of properties ranging from office space leasehold improvements to multi-billion dollar industrial complexes and hotel and resort projects. He has worked with many Fortune 500 companies successfully representing his claims to both IRS and Financial Auditors. Prior to KBKG, Lester led the PwC Central Region Cost Segregation Center of Excellence; providing engineering-based Cost Segregation project management, oversight, and expertise to all other fixed assets teams throughout the U.S. and Canada. He was a recipient of the 2008 PwC Greater Chicago Market Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Leadership. Lester was born and raised in Northwest Indiana and is the head of the KBKG Chicago Office. He earned a Bachelor in Construction Management from Purdue University.

FOR VICE PRESIDENT

Geoffrey Gan CCSP- has 19 years of professional experience related to cost segregation, management consulting, and software application Since 2004, he has overseen and performed hundreds of cost segregation studies as well as developing software applications for a variety of financial technology platforms.  He has personally conducted cost segregation studies for clients ranging from small business owners to Las Vegas resorts and casinos. At Incentax, Geoff leads the cost segregation practice along with supporting various tax incentive programs. Geoff has a Master’s in Business Administration and an Engineering degree in Computer Science both from the University of Southern California.

Ashley Sullivan CCSP – has been a Society member since 2013, she has served on the Board of Directors as Secretary since 2016, participated on the marketing committee and is chair of the conference committee. While Chair of the Conference Committee she oversaw the development of the 10th anniversary annual conference for the Society. Ashley has over 12 years of experience in the fixed asset industry.  Her current focus is on performing technical reviews of Cost Segregation & TPR Studies, building an education platform for new Cost Segregation team members & CPAs as well as business development.   Ashley is from Virginia Beach, VA and works as the Manager of the VA office for MS Consultants, LLC.
